254 KES Highland Cadet Corps

The 254 King's-Edgehill School Highland Cadet Corps gives students the opportunity to experience the ritual, ceremony and discipline associated with this long-held school tradition.

The 254 has the unique privilege of wearing the full dress Black Watch uniform of the Royal Highland Regiment of Canada. Students participate in a range of cadet activities including annual inspection, church parade, and the Remembrance Day Parade.

History of the Corps

The Cadet Corps was started in 1881 and consisted of about two dozen cadets. The uniform was a double breasted navy blue jacket and trousers with a white peaked cap. The uniform was very similar to that still worn by Naval officers, and while the Corps was undoubtedly very smart, it could hardly be called dangerous as its rifles were made of wood! In 1910 the uniform was changed to knee breeches, khaki jackets, puttees and forage caps. At this time the Corps became affiliated with a Reserve force unit of the Royal Canadian Artillery, with headquarters in Windsor, Nova Scotia.

Remembrance Day Service

Every year on November 11, Canadians pause in a silent moment of remembrance for the men and women who have served, and continue to serve our country during times of war, conflict and peace. We honour those who fought for Canada in the First World War (1914-1918), the Second World War (1939-1945), and Korean War (1950-1953), as well as those who have served since then. More than 1,500,000 Canadians have served our country in this way, more than 100,000 have died. They gave their lives and their futures so that we may live in peace.

Remembrance Day ceremonies are held at the KES Memorial and the Cenotaph in downtown Windsor. On completion of the Remembrance Day Service downtown, we march back to School grounds, halting on the roadway in the area of our memorial. The Flag Party marches off and the Corps plus any others attending are invited, on dismissal, to place their poppies at the foot of the KES Memorial in remembrance of "our" fallen comrades.
Annual Cadet Inspection

The Annual Ceremonial Review of the Cadet Unit represents the final and ultimate event of the local corps yearly training activity. Cadets demonstrate the skills and knowledge acquired during the year by displaying their accomplishments to parents, friends, members of the community and especially to potential recruits in the Canadian Cadet Movement.
