Cadets Represent Canada in the Netherlands

I am delighted to share the details of a significant expedition. A contingent of 19 King’s-Edgehill School cadets have had the honour of representing Canada at a meaningful ceremony and parade in the Netherlands which happened yesterday, on September 19.

The ceremony marked the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the region from tyranny in 1944, which accelerated the end of World War II. Canadian soldiers reached Oss in September 1944, just before the infamous "Hunger Winter," saving the community from siege and starvation, which much of the Netherlands subsequently endured. To this day, the people of Oss remember their ancestors' experiences and make considerable efforts to honour their present-day freedoms. Oss was liberated by a Canadian Black Watch Regiment, making our kilts, pipes, and choir's presence particularly poignant. We are returning five years after our last visit, which was for the 75th anniversary in 2019, to strengthen our bond with the community and Maasland School.

We have assembled a group of musically talented and distinguished students. They are continuing their studies while traveling, attending a Dutch school and adhering to an academic schedule to some extent. I would like to express my gratitude to Captain James Skafte (CO, Parade Instructor), Mrs. Kiaya Lakes (Operations), Ms. Stephanie Fillman (Choir Director), and Mr. Ian Lang (Pipe Instructor) for their assistance in chaperoning the trip and preparing the team. I also appreciate Mr. Joe Seagram's support in recognizing the historic and cultural significance of this invitation.

Over 7,600 young Canadian men and boys perished liberating the Netherlands. The following students have marched, sung, spoke, and piped to honour them:
