Over the next few weeks, we want to shine a spotlight on some of our leading actors in the upcoming Junior School production Mary Poppins Jr. This week, we are introducing you to Bert and Mary Poppins!
Bringing charm, energy, and a touch of magic to Mary Poppins Jr., Grade 9 student Nathan Woo '28 will take on the role of Bert, the cheerful and charismatic chimney sweep. Bert serves as the story’s lively narrator and a guiding presence for both the Banks children and the audience, making the role both fun and dynamic. Nathan has been deeply involved in KES musicals since his arrival, most memorably portraying Rooster in last year’s Annie Jr. His dedication to theatre extends beyond the stage, as he has been pursuing voice lessons and continues to hone his craft in drama classes. Known for his infectious energy and commitment to his roles, Nathan is sure to deliver a performance that audiences won’t forget.
Stepping into the title role of Mary Poppins is Grade 9 student Sawyer Harris '28. Mary is the practically perfect nanny who arrives to bring order, joy, and a little bit of magic into the Banks household. Sawyer is no stranger to the stage, having taken on many memorable roles at KES, including Violet in Willy Wonka Jr.,Michael in Matilda, Grace in Annie Jr., and most recently, Jordan in the Senior School’s production of Ranked. Beyond acting, Sawyer is deeply passionate about music and theatre, actively participating in music and drama classes, picking up additional instruments on her own time, taking private voice and drum lessons, and always putting in the effort to perfect her performances. Her strong vocal ability and engaging stage presence make her a perfect fit for the role of Mary Poppins, and she is sure to bring both magic and heart to the production.
Mary Poppins Jr. performances will be held on Friday, February 28 and March 1 at 7:00 pm, with an additional matinee on Saturday, March 1 at 2:00 pm. Join us for an evening – or afternoon – of magic and music as these young stars and many others light up the stage with their talents and passion for the performing arts.
