Students Attend Controlled Damage at Neptune Theatre

A group of students from the IB Theatre Arts program and the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee had the incredible opportunity to attend Controlled Damage at Neptune Theatre in Halifax. The evening began with a shared dinner in downtown Halifax before diving into the world of live theatre.

For some students, this was their first time experiencing a live production. While a few admitted feeling hesitant or unsure of what to expect, their post-show reactions told an entirely different story. They were captivated by the exceptional acting, beautiful singing, and heartfelt storytelling. Many shared how moved they were by the production’s portrayal of Viola Desmond’s inspiring story and how the show’s creative choices brought the characters to life in a powerful and impactful way.

A highlight of the evening was the post-show talkback session with the cast and director. Students were able to ask questions about the creative process and hear directly from the performers about how they connected with their characters. Some members of our group spoke up during the session, sharing how the story resonated with them and expressing their admiration for the performances. This interactive opportunity added a meaningful layer to their understanding of theatre and storytelling.

While it was a long night, everyone agreed it was well worth it. The experience not only brought Viola Desmond’s story to life but also opened a door for many students to the magic of live theatre. Hopefully for some, this evening was a transformative introduction to a world they now cannot wait to explore further.

We are grateful that Neptune Theatre is close by to attend such a thought-provoking and beautifully executed production and look forward to many more opportunities like this in the future.
