King's-Edgehill Junior School Students Experience Senior National Public Speaking Competition
This past weekend, Altyn Hood '29, Ruari Ryan '29, and Isabelle Sampson '28 proudly represented King's-Edgehill School at the Senior National Public Speaking Competition in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Hosted by St. John’s-Ravencourt School, this prestigious annual event gathers the best public speakers from each province and territory for an intense three-day tournament. Students competed in rounds of debate, impromptu speaking, persuasive speaking, and interpretive reading, with the top six competitors earning spots at the World Public Speaking Championship.
Altyn, Ruari, and Isabelle are rising stars within our public speaking program. Despite being four years younger than most participants, we felt it was essential for them to experience a competition of this calibre to further develop their skills. After a month of dedicated preparation, they took to the national stage with confidence and poise, receiving valuable feedback from some of the country's top coaches.
Beyond the competition, students had the opportunity to explore Winnipeg, visiting the Assiniboine Zoo, exploring the Canadian Museum of Human Rights, attending an NHL game between the Winnipeg Jets and the New York Islanders, and even braving the cold for a skate along the Nestaweya River Trail.
It has been a pleasure working with these students, and their commitment and courage in facing such a high-level competition should be commended. Their performance in this tournament is just the beginning of their journey, and we look forward to seeing them continue to grow and excel in public speaking.
