Grade 6 Collaborative Art

The Grade 6 art class participated in a collaborative painting as part of a submission for the Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS) art contest. The criteria was holiday themed.

I chose Maude Lewis’ Home for Christmas because it seemed so fitting in its theme, the simplicity of the painting and because her work is a provincial treasure.

The painting was divided into 12 and each of the 12 students divided their page into quadrants to best replicate the proportions of the painting. The beauty of doing a collaborative piece of work is the individual style and expression of each student and then bringing their individuality to a collective belonging in the finished piece. There were a few lines that didn't match up and some branches were different colours but overall with some unifying brush strokes, the painting turned out beautifully. There was an audible gasp from the Grade 6 class when I showed them the board with the 12 paintings all put together. I was very proud of their commitment and vision for this piece of artwork.
