The Canadian Chemistry Contest

On April 23, a group of Grade 11 and 12 IB chemistry students wrote the Canadian Chemistry Contest (CCC) created by the Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC). This contest is free for students to write and is divided into two parts, multiple choice and extended response. The contest must be completed in 2.5 hours. This was the first time that we participated in this contest at KES.

The CIC states that the CCC was made to develop and foster an appreciation of chemistry as a career for talented young people and promote national excellence in chemistry at the high school level. Over 400 students write this exam annually. The CCC is aimed at the top 10% of Canadian high school students taking chemistry.

This year, 489 students from across Canada wrote the contest and four of our students are receiving a CIC Certificate of Merit for their performance in the contest. This certificate is presented to students who achieved a grade higher than 50%. Along with a certificate, the top three students in each province are awarded with cash prizes.

Thank you to all the students who participated this year. We hope to do this contest every year, so please speak to Ms. Maguire if you’re interested in writing it next year on April 23, 2025.
