The Readers Rumble

On Thursday, April 25, a team of readers from King's-Edgehill School in Grades 7 and 8 travelled to Halifax to take part in the inaugural Reader's Rumble event at Armbrae Academy. Nine teams from Nova Scotia competed in a trivia event based on a curated list of 42 books. One of our very own debate coaches, Nick Szymanis served as the host and posed the questions to the teams.

Alethea Cheng '29, Ruari Ryan '29, Maggie Wellard '28, Emery Endres '28, and Lidya Mercan '28 showed great determination and character throughout the year tackling this diverse list of books that included modern classics like A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin, and The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank, as well as recent fiction and graphic novels like The Witch Boy by Molly Knox Ostertag. Success in this challenge required focus and an open mind over several months.

Teams were given 60 seconds to come up with answers to questions like, "Which book takes place in an archipelago?" and "In which book do we find Buddy?" Other questions were given in the form of a quotation or image, and students had to choose which book those came from. Our team faced very fierce competition and did not make it to the final round. I was very proud of their efforts, and happy that they read into new areas and genres. The Grade 7 students came up with some good strategies for next year: team t-shirts, and splitting up the list to cover more ground. Great work team! And many thanks to Armbrae Academy for putting on this great event!
