Wrestling season Wrap Up
Our Senior Girls' Wrestling team won an historic NSSAF Provincial Championship banner last weekend. We took 8 competitors to the Provincial Championships and brought home 7 medals, including a GOLD for Team Captain Téa Racozzi and the Provincial NSSAF Senior Provincial Girls' banner. KES won SILVER with Tommy Xu in the Senior 120 kg class and Callum Lovelace in the 63 kg Junior class. Ella Brown, Sharon Estrada and Mona Mohamed each won SILVER and Camryn Kleynhans won BRONZE.
The year started as a developmental year, with only one returning wrestler, on the eventual Provincial Championship Senior Girls' Team. We competed in many high school and open events throughout the province including Atlantics, Maritime Wrestling Festival, Provincial Open Championships and a variety of invitational high school events and qualifiers. The team, made up of mostly rookies, gained experience at each practice and competitive opportunity. Our first full - team event was our 23rd Annual KES Tournament. This proved to be one of the biggest tournaments of the year, including teams from N.B. and PEI. Our senior girls started to ignite excitement when they placed in a tie for second overall with Colonel Gray, from PEI, at this first major tournament. They also placed second overall in the Atlantic Championships. This was a sign that there was a chance for our senior girls to aim at a provincial championship, although a lofty goal.

At the Provincials: our lone Junior boy Callum Lovelace won SILVER (shocked everyone, mostly himself!), our Senior boy Tommy Xu won SILVER (gave everything and was a gentle big brother to all), and 6 Senior girls (Elizabeth was injured at Regionals and couldn’t compete). Téa led the girls with our only GOLD medal on the day. She was stoic and gained more confidence and inspiration as the weekend wore on. Ella Brown was amazing and was another one of our wrestlers in the finals. Camryn placed 3rd in the same weight class (no team points since only the top wrestler in each class scores team points) and both girls beat some very experienced competition on their way to the podium. Ella Jollymore was in Téa’s weight class and braved the tough competition, including Téa. Mona was .5 kg in the weight class above Téa and she earned two points for placing second and getting roughed up by the same girl twice. Sharon also made the finals and lost to a tough CEC opponent who has many years of wrestling experience, including Nationals. This was one we expected to not win, but the 2nd place was important for team points we counted on securing.
The senior girls were able to win the Provincial Championship banner on the heels of the Regional banner. Both banners were first-ever accomplishments for KES Senior Girls wrestling! This was a transitional year, with Mr. K. Walsh handing over the helm next year to Mr. Verryn - Stuart. As Head Coach next season, Mr. Stuart will be assisted by Mr. Walsh. They will have many returning wrestlers, including team Captain Tea, along with fellow provincial medalists Camryn, Ella B. and Callum. They will be joined by promising juniors from this year Quinn and Noah, who will both be in the senior division next year. We also have two returning junior girls, who wrestled their first matches this year, Maggie and Kara. Out of this group, only Tea and Noah had previous experience. We will now have four times the number of experienced wrestlers next year as compared to this year. We hope to bring in more student - athletes who are willing to work hard to develop a strong team for 2018-19.
