Results of the 23rd Annual KES Wrestling Tournament 2018

Senior girls KES team placed third overall, lead by Tea Racozzi with gold. Nathan Danquah also won gold and Noah and Maggie Mills win silvers.
Thanks to those who came out to watch our 23rd Annual KES Wrestling tournament. Special thanks to those who came out to help volunteer, including Brian Casey, who ran the score clock for a couple hours on one of the mats as well as the Headmaster taking lots of pictures. We were fortunate to have some parents who chipped in to help throughout the tournament and during the cleanup. Many thanks to all.

Tournament highlights were a gold medal for Nathan and Tea. They both were excellent ambassadors of our school wrestling program. They not only wrestled well, but were in the corner helping to coach and lead their teammates in every match. Tea lead the senior girls’ team to a 3rd place team finish. This was a great result, considering we lost the team title by only 4 points and we selected to have Sharon and Elisabeth in the same weight class to get Sharon more experience. In any of the more important qualifier tournaments, Sharon will move up and earn more team points, since only one wrestler can score points for each team in each weight class.

Noah Mills wrestled to the finals in some great wrestling, in the junior boys’ division. He ultimately lost to the more experienced Bathurst wrestler in the finals. He will be the top wrestler in the province, in his grouping, with more commitment to training on the mat. His younger sister Maggie, although training with the team last year, wrestled in her first tournament and although extremely nervous was able to win two of her three matches for a second place finish and a boost to her confidence. She will progress to great success, with more practice time on the mat and more match experience. As a grade 7 she will be hoping to compete on even ground with the grade nine students in her weight class.  Another brave junior, Kara Day, rounded out our small junior girls’ team and gained some valuable experience in her first event against some much bigger and older girls. She started wrestling late in the term and showed great determination in her first matches and never gave up.

There were a number of other wrestlers who were in their first match and tournament ever and they all made great progress. Quinn Emery wrestled well in his first tournament as a junior, getting a solid win in his first match, but was ultimately withdrawn from the tournament, due to a shoulder injury he has been nursing over the past week. The balance of the senior girls’ team were all rookies. Ella Brown, Ella Jollymore, Camryn Kleynhans, Elisabeth Usachova and  Sharon Estrada rounded out the team and each gained valuable experience. They all worked hard on their offense and were in some tough matches. Ella B. and Camryn each were fortunate to compete against some Canada Games Wrestlers and National Champions, from N.S. and P.E.I. Elisabeth and Sharon were in the same weight class and ended up in a three – way tie, when Elisabeth defeated Sharon in a tight scramble. This took Sharon out of first place. This was Tommy Xu’s first tournament, after taking a year off wrestling last year. He wrestled in the 120 kg class and lost both matches, but will be one to watch this year. There is a detail list of results available on “Track Wrestling”.
