Three of our KES students raced on March 1 in the Athletics Nova Scotia Indoor Club Championships at the Canada Games Centre. Since November, they have been training an extra three times per week on top of their other KES sport commitments and are now well-prepared for the upcoming track and field season.
Luciana Zazueta Ibarra '27 is making a big impact on the track and improving by leaps and bounds. A few weeks ago, she ran her first 800m race, and this past weekend, she ran it for a second time, improving by three seconds, earning a silver medal in the 16-17 age group. Luciana also earned a second silver in her 1500m race, cutting an impressive 15 seconds off her time. Given her experience in the metric mile, this improvement is particularly noteworthy.
In the much shorter 60-meter sprint, Fedora Asoh '27 had her second-best sprint of the season and is well-positioned to lead the charge down the homestretch as the ice melts from our Tanna Track.
Emmanuel Adaramodu '26 had a fantastic championship meet, earning a personal best in his 60m dash and placing fifth out of 16 in the 16-17 age group. Better yet, Manny unleashed his powerful stride in the 200m dash, grabbing a silver medal and making significant personal improvement.
Several other athletes had conflicting KES sporting commitments and couldn’t race this weekend, but all are eager to compete in the outdoor season on our beautiful 400m Tanna Track. We will host four meets this season, starting with our Flowers and Showers Invitational series on April 17, 25, and 30. This series serves as our main fundraiser for the team, so if you're able to help by volunteering or making a financial contribution, please reach out to me. We will also host the district championships on May 9-10.
This has been an amazing indoor season, and we absolutely could not have achieved the successes we did without the coaching and snow clearance expertise of Mr. Donnie Armstrong.
