KES Debaters Shine at Nova Scotia Junior Debate Provincials
This past weekend, a powerhouse team of KES junior debaters showcased their talent at the Nova Scotia Junior Debate Provincials, hosted by Halifax Grammar School. They delivered an outstanding performance in both prepared and impromptu rounds.
Ruari Ryan '29, Altyn Hood '29, Nathan Woo '28, Alethea Cheng '29, and Sokha Ebert '30 spent the previous week preparing for the tournament, honing their arguments for a structured debate on the potential ban of social media for youth under 16. They then put their critical thinking and quick reasoning to the test in three impromptu rounds, debating mandatory sport participation, teacher pay tied to student success, and the use of booing a national anthem as a form of protest.
Their hard work and dedication paid off with exceptional results. Nathan Woo, in his first year of debate, secured an impressive 17th place in the provincial rankings – an achievement to be incredibly proud of. Sokha Ebert and Alethea Cheng placed sixth in the team rankings, with Alethea earning an outstanding fifth place in individual speaker scores. Ruari Ryan and Altyn Hood took fourth place in the team rankings, with Altyn finishing seventh and Ruari eighth in speaker scores, securing them a coveted spot at the Canadian National Junior Debate Tournament in Montreal, Quebec, this May.
An incredible weekend for our junior debaters – congratulations to all! KES is proud to have such skilled and passionate representatives on the debate stage.
