Following on the heels of an amazing talk by Dr. Rev. Lennett Anderson on Wednesday to open African Heritage Month in Nova Scotia at our school assembly, the library pick for February honours African Heritage in Canada.
This month’s pick is Dreamer by former Calgary Flames hockey player Akim Aliu. His book is an award-winning graphic memoir aimed at middle schoolers. Aliu was born in Nigeria, raised in Ukraine, and then immigrated to Canada as a youth. When he came to Canada, he spoke Russian and Ukrainian, (no English) and had never tried on a pair of skates. Check the book out to discover how he became a hockey prodigy and was eventually drafted into the NHL. The story details his many experiences of racism in the hockey world at all levels of play and showcases his resilience. This is a great one for sports fans, those who enjoy true stories, as well as readers who can’t get enough graphic novels.
