Emerging Leader – Lydia Libis '28

The Junior School is where KES leadership initially takes root. The Junior School faculty enjoys mentoring the Grade 9 students as they mature within the structure of our school culture. This week, Mr. Kevin Lakes sat down with our most recent emerging leader, Lydia Libis '28.

Lydia is new to the KES fold this year, however, she is already making her mark in the classroom socially and as an exemplary rookie on the Highlanders girls hockey team. She is a motivated student, with an appreciation for her classmates. Her ambitious approach to learning and playing hockey is contagious, for which we are grateful. “She is a great addition,” says coach Mr. Cam Scott. “An excellent player, but she also gets along with all the players. She bridges the relationships between the younger girls and the veterans, it really helps.” Assistant coach Mr. Mark Walker also commended her saying, “She leads by example, every shift, practice and game.” 

With many teachers, coaches, and friends speaking highly of Lydia, we wanted to explore her perspective on leadership. We believe it’s best to let Lydia’s own words speak for themselves.

To me, leadership is about guiding people in the right direction, especially when they’re unsure or not thinking about their path. My leadership style focuses on inclusivity—I always try to make sure people feel involved and supported, and I regularly check in to see if they’re okay.

As for a leader I look up to, I would say my mom’s friend’s daughter, who is currently in university. She’s always been a positive role model for me. We’ve been close since I was little, and I even call her my cousin. Throughout my life, she’s been there whenever I needed advice or support. Her consistent guidance has made her someone I admire.

My future goals are centered around hockey. I hope to continue playing through college or university, and maybe even aim for Team Canada someday. Beyond that, I’m still exploring what I want to do career-wise, but I’ve considered studying criminology.

As for advice to my younger self, I would say, don’t worry about what others think of you. Focus on yourself and what makes you happy, not on other people’s opinions.

I’d say enthusiastic, athletic, and honest.
