When students arrive in the Grade 9 visual arts class, we begin by focusing on drawing the eyes, nose, and mouth, followed by an exploration of facial proportions. One of their first studio projects allows them to practice these essential skills.
First, the students take a close-up photograph of their faces, which is then printed. They choose the side they want to draw and glue the other side onto heavy cardstock. From there, the magic begins. Starting with the eyes, they slowly draw the areas they practiced, adding the nose and mouth while connecting them to the other side of the photograph.
Next, we photocopy the final drawing and experiment with different media, such as watercolors and markers. The students should be very pleased with their final results. Excellent job, everyone!
