Cadets Enjoy Canoeing on Lake Pisiquid!

On Wednesday afternoons, canoeing is a highlight of the active lifestyle enjoyed by cadets in the 254 King’s-Edgehill School Highland Cadet Corps. Each week, a platoon of 20 cadets embarks on a short bus ride to Lake Pisiquid to learn new skills on the water.

Our canoe instructors begin with the fundamentals of canoeing. Even those who have never canoed before understand the importance of expanding their horizons and acquiring new skills. Cadets learn about the various parts of the paddle and canoe, how to hold a paddle properly, and the safe way to enter a canoe from the dock. They practice launching a canoe into the lake and mastering the strokes needed to maintain a straight trajectory.

This week’s group was led by Platoon 2 Warrant Officer Jack Sangster '25 and Sergeant Will Day '25. They assisted the platoon with unloading the canoe trailer and preparing each canoe with paddles, bailers, and tow lines, while ensuring all cadets were outfitted with personal flotation devices (PFDs) and whistles. CI Ms. Morgaine Sullivan '09 oversaw ground operations, and her organizational skills made for a highly effective and enjoyable afternoon at Lake Pisiquid!

A standout during the session was Master Corporal Abby Woodworth '28, who showcased her remarkable canoeing skills acquired during a six-week summer adventure camp. Abby demonstrated her prowess by paddling a canoe into a headwind while expertly keeping it straight using the J-stroke. Well done Abby!
