Grade 10 Observation Drawings of Skulls

The Grade 10 visual arts class had a fantastic start to the year!

We began by focusing on improving drawing skills by looking at value, which is an element of design defined as the lights and darks of an artwork. Value refers to black, white, and ranges of grays in a drawing or painting.

For this project, we used skulls as our still-life subjects, which were placed around the art room. The tan-colored paper acted as a medium value. Drawing from life or a still-life is called observation drawing, and the materials that were used included marker, pencil, and white chalk pastels.

This project was influenced by the American artist Georgia O’Keeffe.
