Rather than complain, Riley Peckford'13 decided to get involved in local politics.
Riley is very enthusiastic about where he lives. He runs his business, King’s Enterprises Ltd., from Kingston, Nova Scotia in the Annapolis Valley. Having to deal with the county office for various permits he is well acquainted with the process that sometimes can slow down initiatives, therefore, he has decided to run as a councillor in his district.
“It is what I hear the most often from people. Red tape is holding up their dreams to start a business or build a home.” says Riley. “You should not need years of experience with permits and developments to turn dreams into reality in this county, the county should be guiding you toward success, not failure.”
Riley returned home six years ago after studying at Carleton University, followed by a year studying project management at Algonquin College. When I asked him his hobbies, he said, “Mostly, I just love working, with an occasional run.” We wish Riley luck in the election on October 19, but most of all we hope people vote for the important municipal positions. I told Riley I would vote for him, but he reminded me that I can only vote in my district. I said he should run for mayor of King’s County so I could check a box in his favour, to which he wisely responded, “maybe in the future.”
