Senior Boys Wrestling has Strong Start to the Season

This past Saturday, five King’s-Edgehill wrestlers competed at the Wrestling Nova Scotia Opens under the Windsor Mat Kings banner. Giacomo Pogliani '27, Kenta Matsuda '27, Inyong Hwang '26, Ewan Shaw '30, and Hugo Montgomery '27 are our most experienced athletes, and they wanted to shake off some of their ‘mat rust’ by wrestling for the first time since last season. They faced very stiff competition from around Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick. Most of them had the benefit of facing their opponents under the officiating of their former coach Mr. Kim Walsh, who retired last year after a long tenure at King’s-Edgehill School.

Giacomo handled his opposition with relative ease, earning a 2-0 record before bowing out of the tournament with a knee he wants to fully rehabilitate before continuing with full wrestling and rugby seasons.

Ewan, our youngest student-athlete, earned two wins via pin and suffered one loss, ending up finishing in first place.

Kenta went up against a very experienced New Brunswick wrestler and beat him via pin in less than 30 seconds. Unfortunately, Kenta suffered a twisted ankle in the rematch and was unable to continue for the day.

Inyong lost his first match via pin. He was up on his opponent by nine points and had him in a pinning combination when he was re-rolled and pinned. More experience for Inyong will help him avoid these mistakes in the future. He then lost a tough match via points after introducing his nose to his opponent’s knee.

The wrestler of the day for the Windsor Mat Kings was Hugo. He had the most matches, the most technical performances, and the toughest opponents. After losing his opener to possibly the most experienced wrestler at the tournament (who went on to win the division), Hugo won his remaining three contests with two pins and point superiority. He overcame his skilled opponents with technique, athleticism, toughness, and intelligence.

We are already looking forward to competing in School Sport Nova Scotia’s first tournament of the year, in Bridgewater at Park View Educational Centre in January. This time, it will be with many more of our student-athletes, including many who will make their debut on the mat. We are sure they will represent King’s-Edgehill School in the same dignified and respectful manner that our group of young men did in Eastern Passage this past weekend.
