Kristy Michaud ‘24 came to KES in August of 2022 to refine her already remarkable skills as a goalie – and to help win games. She did both, playing a major role in bringing home the Power Prep Hockey League Championship Cup in 2024. For her prowess between the posts and her leadership on and off the ice, she was of interest by universities across Canada and the United States. However, after a decade of dedicated time in a cold rink, change was in the air for Kristy.
In her first spring at KES, she tried track and field, but it wasn’t quite the right fit. Michaud then switched to our large rugby team and used her speed to outrun everyone on the field. However, at the end of the rugby season, Kristy came to me and said that next year she was joining our track team. I was so incredulous that I filmed her saying it – just to be able to show the video a year later when (in my mind) she’d surely still be holding a rugby ball.
The good news is that I was partly right – but better yet, I was mostly wrong. Kristy didn’t return to track in the spring. She joined our winter track team! Each week, she would deflect nearly every puck during hockey practice, then come run laps with her track and field teammates. As quick as her sprint speed in the 100m and 200m events, it soon became clear: Kristy would be pursuing track at the university level.
This year marks Kristy’s first as a UNB Red, and she has continued to excel. It’s rare for a freshman track athlete to qualify for the U SPORTS Championship meet – let alone in two events. But after playing her part at the Atlantic University Sport Championship to secure victories in the 4x200m and 4x400m relays, Kristy and her Reds teammates were able to race their best at the national championships.
One of the great aspects of King’s-Edgehill is the ethos among coaches to support the athlete first. They may have come to KES with one sport in mind but then see an array of activities to try once they spend a short time on campus. Very often this results in discovering an ability or trait that serves them very well in their pursuit to Be More.
Kristy has done us proud and we wish her the best of luck as she prepares for her outdoor season.
