Making a Difference on Earth Day

Monday, April 22, was Earth Day and all Junior School students took advantage of the crisp, sunny weather to get outside and take part in “clean and green” activities. Mr. Eric Kershaw and Mr. Patrick LePoidevin set the tone for the day, cycling almost 40 kilometers to campus from Wolfville as the sun was rising. It must have been a cold ride! All Grade 8 students joined Mr. Kershaw, Mr. LePoidevin, Mr. Pate (student teacher), and Ms. Stephanie Fillman on an off-campus hiking and garbage clean-up adventure along the Kentville Ravine and Miner’s Marsh.

Back on campus, stations were set up so students could experience a variety of activities to celebrate nature. Bird feeders were created from recycled paper rolls covered with peanut butter and seeds, and students rolled up their sleeves and got dirty as they selected and planted a variety of herb and vegetable seeds. The trays of potted seeds will receive continued care and we will be checking for early signs of germination in the days and weeks ahead. All students also had the opportunity to green up our community as they headed out with gloves and garbage bags, picking up trash on campus and throughout the town of Windsor, and everyone had fun racing around campus to find a variety of eco-friendly scavenger hunt items. Congratulations are extended to the winning teams: Jacob Edgecombe'27, Jake Trask '27 and Rowan Frances '27, Alexander Slaunwhite '27 and Brin Lloyd '27.

It was an excellent start to our day. Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to raise awareness for environmental stewardship and to carry out activities that make our community cleaner and greener. A Special thanks is extended to Ms. Stephanie Cummings for planning our Earth Day events.
