Grade 9 Cell Projects

This week, the Grade 9 science students let their creative juices flow! Groups of students were tasked with finding an inventive way to depict either a plant cell or an animal cell using materials of their choosing. Not only were these models presented to their peers, but the students made stop-motion or live-action videos of their construction processes to play for the class. The students will be following all of this up with an opportunity to fine-tune their writing skills with a formal lab report. Bonus points were awarded for coming up with ideas that I had never seen presented before. I can say with confidence that a plant cell made from a full-sized, homemade door is not an idea that I have come across! Cell model day was also so fun because several groups brought in cakes, brownies, or Rice Krispie creations that were beautifully decorated with icing, candies, and homemade fondant. Of course, we had to sample everything, and I definitely did not need supper that evening. I congratulate all of the Grade 9 students for taking this project so seriously and for coming up with some of the best projects of this nature that I have had the pleasure of marking over the past 30 years. Well done!
